Austria is a landlocked country in Central Europe, renowned for its stunning Alpine landscapes, rich cultural heritage, and high quality of life. It borders eight countries and has Vienna as its capital, a city famous for classical music, imperial history, and vibrant arts. Here are a few reasons why you must go and visit Austria.
Known for its breathtaking Alpine scenery, rich cultural heritage, and high standard of living, Austria is a landlocked country in Central Europe and shares borders with eight countries including Germany, Italy, and Hungary. The capital city, Vienna, is a hub of classical music, art, and history. Austria is a federal parliamentary republic composed of nine states, and German is its official language. Historically, it was the heart of the Austro-Hungarian Empire and has played a significant role in European politics and culture. Today, Austria is a member of the European Union and maintains a strong economy and vibrant tourism industry.
My first visit of Austria was in Summer of 2014, when which we visited Linz, Vienna, Grossglochner, Innsbruck, Hofgastein, Bad Gastein and Salzburg. Fast forward to 2022, we visited Austria again in summer and this time with our girls in tow. We stayed for some weeks in the Tirol region, where we experienced the true Austrian culture and way of life. We find Austria as a destination that is very family-friendly offering nature and wildlife adventures. We found several hiking trails that can be both easy, fun and interesting for the kids. In most restaurants, just like in the Netherlands, they offer some menu, activities and play area that are ideally suited for the kids. We’re not into skiing, but I can imagine that Austria is also an ideal destination for real-good winter experiences.
Vienna
Vienna, the capital of Austria, is a city where imperial grandeur meets modern sophistication. Nestled along the banks of the Danube River, it boasts a rich history as the former seat of the Habsburg Empire, reflected in its opulent palaces like Schönbrunn and the Hofburg. Vienna also consistently ranks among the world’s most livable cities, thanks to its excellent public services, green spaces, and vibrant cultural life.
Tirol
Tirol, located in western Austria, is a stunning Alpine region known for its dramatic mountain landscapes, rich cultural traditions, and outdoor adventure opportunities. With over 600 peaks rising above 3,000 meters and famous ski resorts like Kitzbühel and St. Anton, it attracts visitors year-round for skiing, hiking, and climbing. The capital city, Innsbruck, blends historical charm with modern vibrancy, offering landmarks like the Golden Roof and access to breathtaking nature just minutes from the city center.
Salzburg
Salzburg, nestled in the Austrian Alps, is a city celebrated for its baroque architecture, musical legacy, and breathtaking scenery. As the birthplace of Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart and the setting for The Sound of Music, it offers a rich blend of history and culture, from the majestic Hohensalzburg Fortress to the elegant Mirabell Palace and gardens. Its UNESCO-listed Old Town, vibrant festivals, and cozy cafés make Salzburg a charming destination for both classical music lovers and nature enthusiasts.
Linz
Linz, the capital of Upper Austria, is a vibrant city on the banks of the Danube River that blends historical charm with modern innovation. Once a Roman fort named Lentia, Linz has evolved into a cultural and technological hub, home to institutions like the Ars Electronica Center and the Johannes Kepler University. Its picturesque Old Town, lively arts scene, and scenic riverside make it a compelling destination for both history lovers and contemporary explorers.
Innsbruck
Innsbruck, the capital of Tyrol in western Austria, is a picturesque city nestled in the heart of the Alps, renowned for its stunning mountain scenery and rich cultural heritage. Grossglochner

Bad Hofgastein
